Plan 9 from Outer Space 3.1 (Twin Turbo) is an exhibition named after a 1957 film by American filmmaker Ed Wood. Marked by an unconventional plot and a distinctly eccentric mash-up of characters, the film offers an experimental perspective built on overlap and falsification—posing, in effect, as a parody of the film industry of its day. Drawing on Wood’s spirit and on the film’s notoriety as one of cinema’s worst records, the exhibition stakes out a singular imaginary grounded in the right to difference and in freedom. With a deliberately provocative sensibility — one that attends to the uncertainties of the human condition—the exhibition celebrates a space for emancipation and disruption. Set in an atmosphere poised between science-fiction references and late-century illusionist spectacle, it cultivates a charged tension between wonder and scepticism.

Through the works of Alice Dittmar, Carla Cabanas, João Onofre, Jonathan Sullam, Jorge Queiroz, Pedro Gomes, Raquel Melgue and Stella Geppert, evidence and artifice enter into cross-cutting relationships, softening the line between reality and fiction. By bringing together ideas of hand-made practice and staging, the works also examine the rigour, clarity and evidential character of scientific knowledge—placing side by side the realm of individual hopes and anxieties (projected in the head and the heart) and the realm of shared hopes and anxieties (projected into what is to come, or into the framing of a star–filled sky).

The exhibition is conceived as a walk-through across a sequence of compartments that unfold simultaneously around two movements: an ascent into celestial space within the framework of collective imagination, and a descent into the intimate sphere within the scope of personal life.
